Just as We made a direction of prayer that We approved of for you, we made you the finest, most just, and balanced nation among all other nations in matters of belief, acts of worship, and dealings. This is so that you may be witnesses for the messengers of Allah on the Day of Resurrection, to confirm that they delivered the messages Allah instructed them to deliver to their people, and so that the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ will also witness that he delivered the message he was sent to deliver to you. We [Allah] did not change the direction of prayer that you used to face (Jerusalem) except to reveal---and recompense---who was content with Allah had decreed and submitted to it by following the Messenger; to reveal who would renounce their religion to follow their own desires and not submit to what Allah had decreed. The change of the first direction of prayer was a significant issue except for those to whom Allah granted faith that whatever He decrees for His slaves has profound, far-reaching wisdom behind it. Allah will not make you lose your faith in Him or the prayers you prayed before the change in prayer direction. Allah is kind and compassionate with people; He does not overburden them or cause the rewards of their good deeds to go to waste.
